'Portal' Journal

The eighth issue of the Portal journal, annual scientific and professional publication of the Croatian Conservation Institute, features eleven papers presenting topics in cultural heritage protection. Seven of those are original scientific papers, and four are review articles. Ten are published in Croatian and one is in English. Attached to the articles is a CD containing the catalogue of the Institute’s conservation works in 2016, with 248 items listed.

The journal’s editorial board wishes to thank all collaborators, authors and reviewers who aided in the preparation and delivery of this issue of Portal, while also calling all interested researchers to submit new texts prior to May 1, 2018. Guidelines on how to prepare the texts are available here.

Articles in the eighth issue are listed chronologically, according to their topic of focus, from medieval to contemporary heritage. Investigated are diverse subject matters and a wide range of topics, pertaining to the history, theory and practice of protection, and conservation and restoration of archaeological, movable and immovable heritage. Marijana Krmpotić, Andrej Janeš and Petar Sekulić present results of archaeological, and historical and archival research of a medieval hillfort, i.e. a motte in Gradišće in Turčišće, a village in Međimurje. Srebrenka Bogović Zeskoski investigates the relation between alchemy and the production of pigments, as described in the recipes found in the handbooks on painting from the middle ages to the Renaissance. Jadranka Baković brings forth new insights into the technology and history of restorations of the paintings of the Polyptych of St. Martin by Vittore Carpaccio in Zadar, which were a subject of comprehensive conservation efforts in recent years. Jelena Zagora presents a detailed bibliographical study of painted grounds in Italian art, supplemented with examples from her own restoration practice. Irena Pauk Sili sheds light on the chronology of construction of the Hornwerk barracks in Osijek Tvrđa [fort], based on the studies of historical plans and conservation research. Anđelko Pedišić and Bernarda Ratančić present the comprehensive conservation of the exterior and interior of the wooden chapel of St. Martin in Stari Brod, a project that won the 2017 Europa Nostra Award in the category of conservation. Anita Gamulin and Ivana Letilović describe the conservation work on the building, wall paintings and furnishings of the Baroque church of St. John in Jelsa. Lucija Vuković investigates the case of devastation and restoration of Vlaho Bukovac’s portrait of Miho Klaić. Marko Špikić presents a period in the wake of WWII, from 1945 to 1949, when conservators took an interest in Senj as an urban ensemble, while also investigating plans for the town renovation after the wartime bombardments. Snješka Knežević delivers a critical analysis of the previously unknown documents from 1969, which discuss the renovation of Zagreb Upper Town related to the plan to construct a hotel on the so-called Vranyczany Plateau. Mladen Perišić brings an overview of how the City of Youth in Granešina, former Pioneers’ City, was envisioned, designed, build and, most recently, renovated.
