The collection of six papers on the history of St. Mark’s Church was published to mark the completion of its year-long renovation. Croatian Conservation Institute, which supervised the larger part of the renovation, initiated the monograph, aiming to compile all existing insights into the construction history of the church, which revealed it to be a particularly multi-layered monument.
Construction alterations of the church can be traced back to the original, still not fully clarified medieval construction, through restoration efforts in the 17th and 18th century, then the major Schmidt-and-Bollé's restoration in the second half of the 19th century, another restoration between the two World Wars and a series of conservation treatments dating from 1967 until today. A separate article provides an account of the research and conservation of the southern portal. Comprehensive archival research was conducted for the purpose of this book, revealing an indeed great amount of thus far unknown information on various aspects of construction and furnishing of the church. The review of its development is further completed with insights gained during construction and conservation work, when findings from the structure were documented in situ, but are otherwise invisible, as they are hidden within the walls or beneath the layers of plaster. Articles are featured with additional notes and high-quality historical and contemporary illustrations, photographs and blueprints. The addendum features archival materials: transcriptions of canonical visitation protocols from the 17th to the 19th century, along with the report of the 1937 conservation of the church. The book thus provides all basic conservation, architectural and historical documentation about the church that can be used as a starting point for all future research and conservation.
