International seminar and workshop, Ludbreg, Croatian Conservation Institute / Ludbreg Conservation Centre, 18th-24th August 2003
The programme of this seminar/workshop, held by Srebrenka Bogovic-Szeskosky (York University, Toronto, Canada) and Romana Jagic (Croatian Conservation Institute, Zagreb), was a follow-up to the professional conference held in August 2001. The programme included presentations and practical exercises with the purpose of giving participants an introduction to the historical techniques of polychromy, gilding, underpainting, along with instructions for preparing materials and recognising techniques and determining treatments.
The seminar lasted for one week and was limited to 60 participants, whereas the workshop was designed for 20 persons, principally employees of the Croatian Conservation Institute, students from the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts, the Arts Academy in Split, the Technical University of Munich and practitioners from several foreign universities. The programme was expanded by presentations and practical exercises led by Valentine Walsh, a restorer of paintings from London and the head art conservation expert at the Welsh National Museum in Cardiff, Great Britain, Robert E. Child. The lectures and practical exercises of the non-destructive methods of research and diagnostics were delivered by Mario Braun of the Croatian Conservation Institute, whilst the lectures and practical exercises on the physical/chemical examination of materials were given by Dragica Kristic, also of the Croatian Conservation Institute.
