Zagreb, March 27th – 29th, 2019
Croatian Conservation Institute, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Zagreb, organizes a specialist workshop "Consolidation of Polychromed Wood: Approaches, Methods and Materials", which will be held from 27 to 29 March 2019 in the premises of the Croatian Conservation Institute in Zmajevac 8.
The workshop will be run by renowned conservator-restorers from Spain – prof. Laura Fuster-López and Voravit Roohthiva.
Laura Fuster-López is a professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the Cultural Heritage of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. The research project "Study of Mechanical and Dimensional Properties of Cultural Materials" was launched in 2007 and the same topic is dedicated to its work as a lecturer both at the University and at numerous seminars and workshops in Spain and abroad. Laura Fuster-López is a board member of the European Network for Conservation Restoration Education (ENCORE) and Assistant Coordinator of the Education and Training working Group of the International Council of Museums – Committee for Conservation (ICOM-CC).
Voravit Roonthiva is a conservator-restorer who has been actively cooperating with the Centre for Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the Government of Catalonia since 2004, particularly with its Department of Painting on a Wooden Carrier and a Polychromed Wooden Sculpture. From 2005 to 2013 he was president of the Conservatora Association of Catalonia. His research focused on the behaviour of wood as a material and preventive conservation of Catalan wooden altars, shingles and benches, and paintings on a wooden carrier. He also collaborates with several Spanish museums (among them the collaboration with the Montserrat Museum), and is currently performing conservation works at the Albéniz Palace in Barcelona.
The three-day workshop program includes lectures and presentations on the characteristics, changes and processes of decay of wooden polychromatics and their consolidation methods. In the practical part of the workshop, some twenty employees of the Croatian Conservation Institute will have the opportunity to compare the possibilities of application and efficiency of various consolidants - means that re-establish lost mechanical strength and improves the internal cohesion of different layers of artwork. The closing, third day of the workshop will be presented case studies, the problems that conservators-restorers encounter and the decisions they have made based on the assessment of the situation, problems and opportunities.
