Archaeology

The “Fortresses of Petrinja Region” is a project that comprises research, renovation and revitalisation of early modern fortresses of Klinac, Pecki and Čuntić. The project is jointly undertaken by the Town of Petrinja, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, Croatian Conservation Institute, Croatian Forests Ltd. and numerous local organisations, aiming to bring together all cultural riches of the Banovina region.

The Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Bela Crkva, Eng. White Church) in Moslavačka Gora was founded in the second half of the 13th century. It is the oldest Pauline monastery in the territory of present-day Croatia. Research, accompanied by conservation construction works of this monastery in Moslavina and one of the most important late medieval sacral buildings of continental Croatia, has been conducted by the Croatian Conservation Institute since 2009. Research has so far included the monastery church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the northeastern part of the monastic complex. On its western front, two Late-Gothic portals were discovered in situ: the richly-carved main entrance to the church and a more simple entrance to the cloister. The main portal was conserved at the Department for Stone Sculpture of the Croatian Conservation Institute, and is to be permanently displayed at the Museum of Moslavina in Kutina, beginning from the “Night of the Museums” on 25th January 2013.

Croatian Conservation Institute conducted a survey of the site of Crkvišće in Bukovlje near Generalski Stol. A church that was researched stands on top of a Bronze Age hill fort settlement. The entire plateau with the hill fort, stone ramparts and the church is situated in an excellent geostrategic position of the Mrežnica River bend opposite the Old Town of Zvečaj.

Ludbreg before Ludbreg – Archaeological Excavations of Ancient Iovia

Ancient Iovia (civitas Iovia - Botivo) was built in the early Roman imperial period on the important road route which linked Ptuj (Poetovio) and Osijek (Mursa), two large centres of the province of Pannonia. The spatial organisation of Iovia overlaps with the area of the wider centre of present-day town of Ludbreg. Iovia was probably destroyed during the Gothic incursion in the late 4th century. The archaeological excavations carried out by the Division for Archaeological Heritage of the Croatian Conservation Institute between 2008 and 2011 in the centre of the present-day town of Ludbreg (Somođi Garden) were a continuation of systematic test-pit excavations carried out in the wider town zone by the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb.

Mediaeval Fort of Possert, Near Paz, in Istria

possert_blog

Fort Possert, near Paz, is one of the few feudal forts in Istria featuring a preserved Gothic keep. The systematic archaeological research and conservation interventions initiated by the Croatian Conservation Institute in 2007 have provided a significant contribution to knowledge of mediaeval residential architecture in this region. The archaeological exploration, and particularly the discovered inventory originating from the period between the 14th and the early 17th c., have generated new assumptions concerning the history of the fort, and the planned completion of conservation repairs will make it possible to present this valuable monument to the public.
