Strand 1.2.1: Co-operation measures
EwaGlos (European Illustrated Glossary for Conservation Terms of Wall Painting and Architectonic Surfaces) is the title of the international project which has for a goal the development of multilingual illustrated dictionary for conservation terms of wall painting and architectonic surfaces. Several chapters of the dictionary will cover the basic terminology from this field: materials, artists and techniques, state of monuments, phenomena of its aging and deterioration and methods of the conservation and restoration. With the adequate structure of its content and the translations of high quality the intention is that everybody can use this dictionary. The experts and the institutions from seven different countries are participating in the project. One of the partners is the Croatian Conservation Institute, represented by Ivan Srša, consultant conservator-restorer in the Department for Wall Paintings and Mosaics.
The project was initiated by Dr. Angela Weyer, director of the Hornemann Institute from Hildesheim, Germany who contacted in 2012 the potential partners from different European countries and proposed the participation in the elaboration of the multilingual illustrated dictionary on the conservation and restoration of wall paintings and architectonic surfaces. The gathering of experts and the application of the project EwaGlos to the European Commission were finished on November 15 2012. The project was accepted on March 1 2013.
The two-year project started in October 2013 and it shall end on September 30 2015. The total contracted value of the project is 398.040,00 EUR. The European Union grant is awarded in the amount of 199.020,00 EUR (50%). The budget of the Croatian Conservation Institute is 46.590,00 EUR, of which 23.295,00 EUR are financed from the European Union grant.
The EwaGlos dictionary will be divided in several chapters: after introduction which includes the basic terminology of the conservation and restoration of wall paintings and architectonic surfaces, the first part will cover materials, artists and techniques. The following chapter will be dedicated to the state of monuments and the phenomena of its aging and deterioration which will finally lead to the methods of the conservation and restoration.
The intention is that everybody could use the dictionary and it will possible because of the adequate structure of its content and the translations of high quality. The special attention will be presented to the elimination of differences in terms between particular languages. The goal of the project is the translation to 12 languages but after the application there are some new interested experts who would like to participate in the project. It is possible that the dictionary finally contains even more languages.
There are four discussions of participants planned during the project. They will be organized every six months in order to analyze and harmonise the achieved results. The first meeting will be held in Turkey at the begging of February 2014 and the second meeting will be held in Spain. The third meeting will be organized in springtime 2015 in France. The fourth meeting in September 2015 in Croatia, most probably in Ludbreg, will be concentrated on the evaluation of the results of the publication of the pilot version. The demanded changes will be discussed and a revised edition developed. The representatives from CEN, IIC, ECCO and ICCROM should also participate in the meeting together with the coordinator and the partners.
The partners of each country will also organize the national workshops with the objective to harmonise the professional terminology with the standards of their own languages. The first national workshop should be organized between the first and the second meeting of the consortium in 2014 and the second national workshop between the third and the fourth meeting of the consortium in 2015.
