20 years of the conservation workshop in Dubrovnik

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the conservation workshop in Dubrovnik, on 4th and 5th December 2013 the Croatian Conservation Institute will open the door to the public of its Dubrovnik conservation workshops in Villas Stay and Bunić-Kaboga, in order to present its activities in the territory of the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The programme of the two-day event will include lectures featured by an overview of the workshop’s activities and conservation work carried out at the Dubrovnik department, as well as a tour of the conservation workshops.

Founded in February 1993 as part of the former Institute for the Protection of Monuments of Culture and Nature in Dubrovnik, the workshop was located in a space adjacent to the upper cloister of the Franciscan Monastery of Friars Minor. Its main activity was the conservation and restoration of paintings on wooden and canvas support and polychrome wooden sculpture. When the conservation sector in Croatia was integrated in 1998, the Dubrovnik workshop became part of the Croatian Conservation Institute and under the name of Dubrovnik Department for Conservation it was moved to the renovated Villa Stay in Batahovina. Its initial activity was expanded to include the conservation and restoration of paper, parchment and leather heritage at the newly-formed Section for Paper. The renovation of the Villa Bunić-Kaboga which came to an end this year provided additional space designated for the primary conservation activity and the accompanying professional and public events.

Along with the continual financial support from the Ministry of Culture, important donations and financial backing of the foundation of the workshop was provided by Archduchess Francesca von Habsburg, PBZ Privredna Bank, The International Trust for Croatian Monuments headed by Ms. Jadranka Beresford-Peirse, the Regional Government of Lombardy, the town of Lamezia Terme, Mr. Claudio Cavaliere and others.
